Social Media and Politics

Social Media Platform and Politics

Last few years have seen a range of initiatives to use social platforms to engage the audience into the political process through social media. Just as social media has become a significant part of our daily activities; it also has been a growing aspect for the political issues and campaigns.

A person’s perception of political participation in an online environment gives an understanding why people engage in politics both online and offline. When people engage in the political acts online i.e. “Liking” a candidate’s activity or tweeting their views on political platforms. Such activities have a great impact on the functions of the government or as a communication with others.

Other than the traditional ways, digital efforts have been recently made for election campaigns.  Political leaders are learning the potential of the online medium as seen in United States during their election campaigns.

In this age of Facebook and Twitter, the social media strategy for parties is as important as their communication strategy.  Judging against political parties and leaders are generally seen by the blasts of trolls posted on social media. Just like the real world, in social media world also there are people encouraging their parties.  The role of social media is promoting good governance that is recognized by the political parties.
Most middle class Indians experience political activity on social media through news reports on TV than actually by engaging with the mode themselves. There is a less but very engaging Twitter base in India that is highly political and there are constant fights between the political parties.

What we are experiencing is just the tip of an ice-berg. Social Media, especially digital media seems to be more promising in fetching results than others.
