2013 – The Year on Twitter

It is that time of the year again. Every social media site will be sharing the big stories that happened in 2013 on their respective platforms and Twitter is no different!

Twitter has unveiled the 2013 year-in-review pane. The tweets are divided into categories as #2013, #news, #entertainment, #sports and #showcase. The best category is undoubtedly #2013 as it highlights the major events of the year month-by-month and in tweet form, of course!

It is fun to go through the #2013 section and check out the year’s events. The section also features Golden Tweets section which according to Twitter is “this year's most re-tweeted Tweets showed the world coming together to share in loss, love, and celebration.” The Golden Tweet award of 2013 goes to Lea Michele, who on July 29th tweeted a photo of herself and late Glee co-star Cory Monteith. Monteith was found dead on July 13th in a Vancouver hotel room from a heroin/alcohol overdose. Michele’s tweet was shared 408,266 times as fans around the world mourned with her. One of the two runner-ups is the statement from Paul Walker’s staff announcing the news of the tragic death of the actor:

"It's with a heavy heart that we must confirm Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident," read the tweet from @RealPaulWalker.

It was re-tweeted over 400,367 times and the second runner-up is One Direction band member Niall Horan rejoicing in having just turned 20 years old:
"Yesss ! I'm 20 ! Wohooo ! No more teens!" Horan chimed at the Twitter account @NiallOfficial.

There's plenty to explore in Twitter 2013 showcase, but don't lose too much time combing through the past - the year's not over yet, and you've probably got work to do still!

Social Media and Politics

Social Media Platform and Politics

Last few years have seen a range of initiatives to use social platforms to engage the audience into the political process through social media. Just as social media has become a significant part of our daily activities; it also has been a growing aspect for the political issues and campaigns.

A person’s perception of political participation in an online environment gives an understanding why people engage in politics both online and offline. When people engage in the political acts online i.e. “Liking” a candidate’s activity or tweeting their views on political platforms. Such activities have a great impact on the functions of the government or as a communication with others.

Other than the traditional ways, digital efforts have been recently made for election campaigns.  Political leaders are learning the potential of the online medium as seen in United States during their election campaigns.

In this age of Facebook and Twitter, the social media strategy for parties is as important as their communication strategy.  Judging against political parties and leaders are generally seen by the blasts of trolls posted on social media. Just like the real world, in social media world also there are people encouraging their parties.  The role of social media is promoting good governance that is recognized by the political parties.
Most middle class Indians experience political activity on social media through news reports on TV than actually by engaging with the mode themselves. There is a less but very engaging Twitter base in India that is highly political and there are constant fights between the political parties.

What we are experiencing is just the tip of an ice-berg. Social Media, especially digital media seems to be more promising in fetching results than others.

Digital Marketing Strategy

How Digital Marketing Helps a Business in India

Today, we stand in a world of information technology, where the medium of communication is rapidly growing day by day with digitalization being introduced to every aspect of life. A large population on this planet use these methods to stay connected virtually with everyone keeping themselves updated with what is happening around them and the world.

For over a decade, need for digital technology has spread like a wildfire. This day, most of our needs are being catered by internet, be it shopping, looking for news updates, staying updated on technological advances or a simple search for a restaurant nearby. These necessities have given an immense rise to digital marketing.

What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is not only a term; it’s about using several mediums of electronic media to communicate. In simple words, digital marketing is a process of using electronic media such as mobile; computers, television, radio and internet to stay connect with customers in a personal and timely approach. Digital marketing is not held back by geographies as it reaches 80% of web users across the globe.

Need of Digital Marketing

With introduction of digital marketing in India, it redefined the way we used to market products. Now people have an ease to access any information at any time and from any place of their convenience.

According to a report by IBN Live, there are approximately 55.48 crore mobile users in India with an estimate of 14.32 crore with active data connection. This makes India the second largest internet and mobile user population in Asiatic region, which is growing very progressively.
Today digital marketing is the best way to promote any brand or product as compared to traditional marketing. It offers such methods where an organization can easily analyze their day to day marketing activities and campaigns and monitor them efficiently. Digital media is comparatively cheap, offers an easy-to-reach approach to every kind of business, whether it is big or small in size.

Need of Digital Marketing for Small Businesses

Marketing and promotion is the very first need of every business to make consumers aware about their services and products. If the consumers are not aware of a company and its products, they will not get a chance to buy it. And this would contribute to company’s inefficiency of acquiring potential customers.
For big brands it is easy to promote themselves through television ads or with well-known celebrities on a higher level, but this kind of investment might not be feasible for a small business or a start-up and this is where digital marketing plays a crucial role. Digital marketing offers cheap and compatible platforms to small business owners to promote their services. Thus, many small businesses opt for digital marketing strategies as a medium of promotion for the low cost, high visibility and wide reach it promises.

Challenges in Digital Marketing

Consumers are more aware of the changing trends of market as they are the ones who choose and set the trends. They are least interested in what your brand says and more interested in what their friends, media and other say. This is called word-of-mouth marketing.
Every consumer has their own way to communicate with a brand; people choose multiple channels and devices as a source of medium to get aware about new products and services. This makes it important to choose the right digital marketing method to target consumers. It is also equally important to make a good reputation and win trust of your customers. One mistake can leave a negative impression on your consumer. As every consumer wants special attention, it requires efforts to keep in touch with consumers at same time.

Benefits of Digital Marketing

For small businesses, digital marketing can be the right medium to drive new consumers and sales through websites, social networking, video and mobile marketing. Moreover, companies can plan their online marketing strategy for low cost and can earn good revenue by customizing their advertising costs – acquiring more customers.
Apart from this, it is the best way to go viral! Virtually, everybody is online on some or the other social networking platform. With the right use of integration between the platforms and a good campaign you can drive some serious acquisition.

The power of second and third sharing in social media marketing

Designing a social media marketing campaign? Well, then you need to understand the basics of targeting the right audience and the power of sharing. The second and the third audience is more important than the immediate audience, you look forward to. But, for the message to be passed on to the second and third audience, it is essential that the content you prepare is shareable.

Let’s find out that what is actually meant by the terms immediate audience, second audience and the third audience.

Immediate Audience:
Campaigns are normally designed to attract the attention of customers to buy the product or service you are offering. Once the purchase is made, the relationship between the viewers of the ad and the ad is complete. Eg; someone saw the advertisement of a particular watch and buys it. The aim of the marketer gets fulfilled because of that purchase. But, in the long term this is not the only thing you need. There are many social media marketing agencies offer attractive services to design your social media marketing campaign.
Immediate audience is one which you earn directly through your ads.

Second Audience:
A person shares something online when he can connect with it personally and agrees with what has been said/shown in it. As a marketer, your objective is not just to connect with your immediate audience, but it is to satisfy them in a manner that they share & recommend it to their friends & knowns. Your purpose to make ads is not just to get someone’s attention but of influencing them in a way that they convince others also to see your ad.
A person shares & recommends something to express himself or when he think it can be useful to others. So, they should be given something with which they can express themselves.
You mark an impression with your ad, 20 people see it and all of them buy it, then too the campaign will not be successful till the time they all share it.
You gain second audience when your first audience shares your content.

Third Audience
Your campaign actually becomes viral and successful only when your first audience shares it with the second audience and the second audience finds it valuable & useful enough to share and pass it on to the third audience.
If your content gets shared three times, you have attracted enough eyeballs that will be curious to know that what is this about which everyone is talking.

Quick Tips For Efficient Social Media Marketing

There are numerous tasks which need to be performed in a day. So, you need to have a strategy in place to regularly update your social media accounts.

Being active online is great. Here’s tips for efficient Social Media Marketing by which your social media efforts become productive:

Be Prepared In advance
Nothing is wrong in preparing content in advance. There are ideas, posts and images which aren’t time sensitive. There might arise situations in a week where you will not be able to come up with things at that very day. So, have some posts and images which you could post at a later date. Facebook & Twitter even give you a liberty to schedule your future posts in advance.

Handle Queries at Only One Location
Social Media offers a great platform to handle queries and complaints. However, it becomes difficult to handle queries on many platforms so it’s better to direct them all onto one channel – Twitter or your mail id as then all your queries will be available at one place and it will become easy for you to respond to them.

Cross Post Content
If you have accounts on more than one channel, you have a diverse group of audience. Figure out if your audience on these platforms share some common interest and then give them that type of content. You can cross-share your content on these platforms. However, do not do this often as it’s quite possible that your fans and followers follow you on more than one social media platform and it would mean a repetition of content for them.

Less Is More
Tweeting and posting regularly on Facebook is great. However, if each of your posts is getting low levels of engagement then cut down on the number of posts and focus on big and eye-catching posts. Once you see enough engagement, you can start increasing the frequency of your posts.
Try posting at different times as that way you would come to know about the time when your audience is logged in at and you can accordingly post at that time.
